Publication of a study examining the success of IT professionals in the gig economy
Professorship Digital Transformation - The current study "IT Professionals in the Gig Economy: The Success of IT Freelancers on Digital Labor Platforms" examines the success of IT freelancers on digital labor platforms. Based on signaling theory, the study uses a dataset of 7166 IT freelancers to examine how different signals lead to success. The results show that the three types of signaling positively influence the objective career success of IT freelancers. This work contributes to the literature by testing signaling theory in the new context of digital labor platforms, examining IT specifics, and proposing support as a new signaling type for IT professionals on digital labor platforms. Practically, the findings provide guidelines for IT freelancers to improve their career success.
